Domenico Orlando was born in Salerno on August 11th, 1979.
When he was 6 years old he started piano studies and after a few years he discovered the oboe and discovered his passion for music. At the age of just 17 he earned a Diploma with honor grades at the Conservatory of Music in Salerno, in the oboe class of Maestro Alfonso Smaldone.
He continued his musical development in Rome with Luca Vignali and in Geneva with Maurice Bourgue, where he received the Diplome de Solist with honors in 2004. In the meantime, he partecipated in several national and international competitions: in 1997 he won second prize (first was not assigned) at the Concorso Nazionale G. Tomassini di Petritoli, where he also received a special Jury Prize. In 2003 he partecipated in the 7th Tokyo International Competition, in which he won 3rd Prize
Even before finishing his studies he had already started working with several orchestras, playing as first oboe in the Santa Cecilia Youth Orchestra in Rome, under Maestro Myung-Whun Chung, at the age of 18. A few years later he was principal oboe in the San Gallen Symphony Orchestra, in Switzerland, while in January 2000 he was playing in the Bayerischerrundfunk orchestra under Maestro Lorin Maazel: In 2001 he won the position as principal oboe at the Teatro Regio di Torino, where he remained until 2009. He is often invited by the Deutsches Symphonieorchester Berlin, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestra Santa Cecilia in Rome, the Orchestra del Teatro dell'Opera in Rome, the Oslo Philharmonic, the Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala di Milano, the Orchestra Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini, Parma, the Orchestra da Camera del Maestro Salvatore Accardo, the London Symphony Orchestra, etc. This activity allows him to play regularly with important conductors such as Lorin Maazel, Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos, Mstislav Rostropovich, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Myung-Whun Chung, Antonio Pappano, Daniel Harding, Kent Nagano, Salvatore Accardo, Daniel Oren, Gianluigi Gelmetti etc. In 2009 he won his current position as Solo Oboe in the Gewandhausorchester in Leipzig, under Maestro Riccardo Chailly.
