Functional breathing training for singers by Nena Brzakovic: This training is recommended for all singers and singing teachers and encompasses what we know about breathing and voice production. Awareness of breath and resonance is developed with specific exercises using the tradition of belcanto and the idea of connecting the voice to the body to train appoggio (support). Important milestones in this training include:
- Posture and working on any posture problems
- Developing awareness of the main breathing muscle (diaphragm) and the secondary breathing muscles (chest, abdomen and pelvic floor)
- Vocal placement, resonance and training vocal approach
- Mastering vegetative and efficient breathing
- Mastering systematic preparation of vocal support and sul fiato
- Legato and staccato phrasing/ messa di voce/ inhalare la voce
- Putting these techniques into practice in repertoire
